Interview with The Original Bowling Company, winner of Most Effective Employer Brand Development

In the first part of this blog series Laura Purvis, Recruitment Manager at The Original Bowling Company and winner of Most Effective Employer Brand Development, shares her thoughts with Richard Turrell, Head of Marketing at First Choice Software.


I’m sure that you have been asked this question many times before but what is the most important attribute of an In-house recruiter?

It’s really important to be passionate about what you do and to be full of enthusiasm. Having the ability to create positive energy around other people is key – it keeps them engaged with the brand… whether it’s colleagues or candidates!

What is it about working for The Original Bowling Company that helps you remain so enthusiastic?

I would say it’s definitely the Culture and the People.  We work extremely hard to ensure that we recruit people in to the business who are aligned to our culture.  The career development opportunities are also fantastic. We have previous Team Members who are now running successful bowling centres as Centre Managers and we have a Regional Director who was previously a Centre Manager. Our success stories are endless, you only need to look at our Facebook page to see how well our teams our doing.

So what was your biggest personal achievement in 2014?

My biggest personal achievement was being awarded Team Member of the Year.  This was for the work that I have done since joining in May 2013 – developing an Employer Brand, implementing a recruitment system (ATS) and Careers Portal, introducing Social Media recruiting and moving all recruitment from paper and agencies, to direct sourcing.  I am obviously extremely proud that the business was awarded ‘Most Effective Employer Brand Development’ at the IHRA and also ‘Best Employer Brand’ at the Recruitment Business Awards back in September.

After delivering so many new initiatives and projects what was your main candidate acquisition source in 2014 and do you see this changing in 2015?

Our candidates have mainly come via different job boards, we have invested a lot in getting our brand out in to the market place and so have been promoting our vacancies across many different boards and channels.  Although we will continue to do this, we fully intend to do much more direct head hunting; this will be the biggest change for us in 2015.

Finally… after such a successful 2014 what do you expect to be your biggest personal challenge in 2015?

My biggest challenge will be ensuring that we move our recruitment to the next level!  Implementing the next phase of our ATS, moving further away from agencies and sourcing more candidates’ directly, using our own head hunting methods.
